Abstract
Objective: As both depression and anemia increase with ages, we need to discuss on the association between them and plan to deal with them, especially in elderly. The authors are to investigate the depression and anemia in the elderly and find the association between them.

Methods: Total 4949 participants who answered to the mental health section of the 6th National Health and Nutritional Survey, conducted on 2013 and 2014 were recruited among the adults over the age of 19 years old. According to the survey, compared the hemoglobin (Hb) level and the depression score depending on the age and sex group.

Results: In comparison of the Hb level and the depression score in each groups and sub-groups, statistically significant differences were shown in all comparisons except hemoglobin comparison of total males between females, non-elderly females between elderly females and depression score comparison of elderly males between non-elderly males. In comparison of the depression score and the presence of anemia, depression score was significantly different according to the presence of anemia in total participants except non-elderly female group. In correlation analysis between the Hb level and the depression score in each group, the Hb level and the depression score showed negative correlations in elderly and significant in female elderly.

Conclusion: The lower Hb level was associated with higher depression score in old age and the negative correlation between them was most prominent in older female.
